Netflix Confirms Launch Date for Australia, New Zealand

/ Mar 3, 2015

Netflix is coming to Australia

Netflix has finally set the date it plans to go live in Australia and New Zealand. The subscription streaming giant will arrive in both countries on March 24 via multiple partnerships with local broadband providers and wireless carriers.

In Australia, Netflix will be available across multiple major internet service providers including IiNET and Optus. As part of the agreement, customers of both service providers will get “un-metered” access to Netflix, meaning they will be able to watch Netflix content without worrying about data caps.

In New Zealand, Netflix has partnered with Vodafone. Subscribers there will receive several months of free access to the service when signing up, the companies said.

As for content, several current and upcoming Netflix original series, including “Marco Polo,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Daredevil,” “Sense8,” “The Adventures of Puss in Boots,” “All Hail King Julien,” and “Virunga,” will be part of the Netflix catalog. The service will also offer other international and local content from distributors such as Beyond Distribution, Roadshow Entertainment, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and Disney. (Via the Disney deal, the studio’s animated hit “Frozen” is coming to Netflix Australia and New Zealand.)

Pricing has not been announced by Netflix, though the company said it will offer three tiers of service, just as it does in the US: SD streaming to one screen; HD streaming on up to two screens at the same time; and HD and 4K (where available) on up to four screens at the same time.

At launch, the Netflix app will be accessible on a wide range of devices, including iOS and Android smartphones and tablets; the Apple TV and Chromecast; the PS3 and PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Wii U; and smart TVs from Samsung, LG, Sony, Philips, Panasonic, and HiSense.
