Netflix, CW Seed, WIGS Among Writers Guild Award Nominees

WGA Awards

Netflix’s 2013 in original programming continues to get recognized by the critical and creative side of the television industry. The company’s original drama and comedy series, “House of Cards” and Orange Is the New Black” are among the nominees for the 2014 Writers Guild Awards, which were announced by the Writers Guild of America (East and West) this morning.

The Writers Guild Awards serve to recognize the best writing in television and new-media (among other formats) for the 2013 season.

Netflix has picked up nominations for best drama series with “House of Cards” and best comedy series with “Orange Is the New Black.” Both shows, which debuted earlier this year, also received nominations in the New Series category. “Orange Is the New Black” was also recognized in the Episodic Comedy category for its first-season episode “Lesbian Request Denied,” which was written by Sian Heder. Both shows are going up against the best-of-the-best on TV, including critical staples like “Breaking Bad,” “Homeland,” “Mad Men,” “Parks & Recreation,” and “30 Rock.”

The WGA noms continue Netflix’s stellar run through awards season, which began with multiple nominations and wins at the Primetime Emmy Awards and continued earlier this week with several nominations for the 2014 Producers Guild Awards. However, unlike the Emmys and PGAs, this is the first time the company’s prison-comedy “Orange Is the New Black” is being recognized by an industry body. To date, “House of Cards” and “Arrested Development” have been responsible for most of Netflix’s nominations.

Netflix wasn’t the only new-media programmer to be recognized by the WGA, though. Nominees in the annual Short Form New Media — Original category the YouTube scripted drama channel WIGS and The CW’s original digital content arm, CW Seed.

“Episode 4: The Collected Sylvia” (Sylvia Plath: Girl Detective), Written by Mike Simses;

“Episode 8” (Lauren, Season 2), Written by Jay Rodan;

“I Do Over Part 1” (Husbands), Written by Bradley C. Bell & Jane Espenson;

“I Do Over Part 2” (Husbands), Written by Bradley C. Bell & Jane Espenson;

The 2014 WGA winners will be announced on February 1, 2014, via dual ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.

Yesterday, Netflix announced that season two of “House of Cards” would premiere on February 14. It’s also renewed “Orange Is the New Black” for a second season.
