Netflix and Facebook Allow Users to Send Private Recommendations to Friends
Ever watch something on Netflix, and after finishing, think of someone you know who would also love it? Well, Netflix now has a way for you to privately recommend any movie or TV show to that person.
The streaming service is rolling out a new social recommendations feature, which will let users privately send messages to their Facebook friends and direct them to a particular movie or TV show. “When you finish watching something you’ll be asked if you know anyone else who’d like that show, and prompted to find your friends by connecting to Facebook,” said Cameron Johnson, Netflix’s director of product innovation, in a blog post.
Netflix won’t post these recommendations as status updates on Facebook’s news feed, Johnson added. Instead, the next time the friend logs on to Netflix, they will receive an alert telling them a piece of content has been recommended for them. Users will also have the option to include a message to the recommendation, and will be notified if the friend watches the movie or show, or adds it to their watch list.
For friends who have not connected Facebook to their Netflix accounts, the service will send the recommendation as a private message via Facebook Messenger.
This new feature is available on Netflix’s website, as well as its apps for iOS devices, the PS3, Xbox, and numerous set-top boxes and smart TVs. (Though I imagine it will be mostly used by those watching on computers and mobile devices.)
