REPORT: Netflix Might Save Another TV Series

/ Nov 14, 2014

Netflix might be resurrecting another canceled TV series.

According to Deadline, the company is in deep negotiations with Warner Horizon for season four of crime drama “Longmire,” which aired on A&E for three seasons before being canceled by the network earlier this year.

Starring Robert Taylor and Katee Sackhoff, “Longmire” is based a series of mystery novels written by Craig Johnson. It centers on a county sheriff in Wyoming who returns to work after his wife’s death. Assisted by friends and family, the sheriff investigates major crimes while campaigning for re-election.

The show was the most popular original scripted series for A&E, averaging more than 5.5 million viewers during its second and third seasons. Which made the news of its cancellation surprising to fans. Unfortunately for them, the show’s audience skews old, making it not the ideal program for advertisers.

Obviously, that wouldn’t matter to a subscription streaming service like Netflix, which famously does not provide viewership data on any of its programming (except when it recently disclosed the popularity of kids’ programming on its service).

Per Deadline, once “Longmire” was canceled by A&E, Warner Horizon launched efforts to find a new home for it. Netflix was considered a top destination because it also offers previous seasons of the show. While deep in negotiations, a deal hasn’t been set, the report cautions. If completed, season four would likely begin production in March.

It would be also another TV series that Netflix has rescued. The company has previously commissioned fresh seasons of the critically acclaimed comedy “Arrested Development” (with the potential for even more seasons) and the AMC crime drama “The Killing.”
