Netflix Orders Musical Series from Baz Luhrmann
Netflix has ordered a musical series from Baz Luhrmann to premiere on the streaming service in 2016. Called “The Get Down,” it takes place in New York City in the 1970s and focuses the music scene, one that exploded as the city faced particularly tough economic times.
The series will span 13 episodes (each an hour long) and will be Luhrmann’s first “musical” since feature film “Moulin Rouge.” The series is executive produced by Luhrmann, who will direct the series’ first two episodes in addition to the season finale.
Luhrmann has been working on the series “ for over 10 years,” which will finally come to light with Sony Pictures Television as a production partner. Other executive producers on “The Get Down” include Catherine Martin (who’s also worked on Luhrman projects “The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge”), Paul Watters, Thomas Kelly, Stephen Adley Guirgis, Shawn Ryan, and Marney Hochman.
Here’s a small taste of the series, which shows New York covered in graffiti and filled with the energy of new music and break dancing:
