Netflix Orders Two Seasons of New ‘Winx Club’ Spinoff
Netflix has inked a deal with children’s entertainment company Rainbow Studios to launch a spinoff series based on the “Winx Club” Italian toon franchise.
“Winx Club Wow: World of Wix” will premiere exclusively in all Netflix territories, including France and Germany, in early 2016. In total, Netflix has ordered two seasons of the show, with the second season coming to the streaming service in the fall of 2016. Each season will consist of 13, 22-minute episodes.
Described as an action and fantasy show, the “Winx Club” series of cartoons focuses on a group of girlfriends who live in and explore a magical world. “Winx Club Wow” will follow the girls — fairies in their universe — as they embark on a journey to look for talented kids in arts, sports, music, and science.
The series will be produced by Rainbow, which has an existing partnership with Netflix to distribute all seasons of the original “Winx Club” as well as other animated series from the Italian animation studio. These shows have been popular on the streaming service, according to the companies.
As part of the new deal, Netflix will also make the most recent “Winx Club” movie, “The Mystery of the Abyss,” available to subscribers in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, and France shortly after its theatrical release.
“Winx Club Wow” is the latest addition to Netflix’s growing kids programming slate. Yesterday, the company announced a deal with Saban Brands for an original series based on the popular Popples toy line. These shows will join an original content lineup that includes multiple series from DreamWorks Animation and upcoming shows based on popular kids’ entertainment brands like “Magic School Bus” and “Ever After High.”Tags: Kids Series, Netflix, netflix originals, Rainbow Studios, Series Order, Winx Club, Winx Club Wow
