Netflix Sets SXSW-Winning ‘Print the Record’ as Its Next Original Docu-Film

Netflix’s latest original documentary is “Print the Legend,” a SXSW-winning film set inside the world of 3D printing.

“Print the Legend” is directed, shot, and edited by Luis Lopez and Clay Tweel (“The King of Kong”). It goes behind the scenes at some of the top American 3D printing companies, including MakerBot, Formlabs, Stratasys, and 3D Systems, and documents their struggle for dominance in a field that could revolutionize how humans interact with the world.

Netflix positions the film as both a documentary about the 3D printing industry and a “compelling tale about what it takes to live the American Dream.” Specifically, the documentary captures the challenges faced by 3D startups MakerBot and Formlabs as they try to release consumer 3D printing models and control how their companies are positioned in the media against more established players like Stratasys and 3D Systems.

A portion of the story will also focus on provocateur Cody Wilson, who uploaded his printable-gun files to the internet, which obviously set-off a media firestorm.

“It’s so rare for a film to capture history in the making, and Luis Lopez and Clay Tweel have done just that in their skillful presentation of the elation and betrayals experienced by young entrepreneurs detailing the groundbreaking technology of 3D printing, said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of original documentary and comedy, in a statement. “This is a compelling glimpse into a game changing technology as it nears an inflection point going from the fantasy world of a few obsessed visionaries to a must-have technology that may enter every home.”

“Print the Record” will be available in all Netflix territories later this year. It won the Special Jury Recognition Award for Editing & Storytelling in the Documentary Feature Competition at South by Southwest 2014.

The film was produced by Steven Klein (“Make Believe”), and developed, produced, and financed by Chad Troutwine (“Freakonomics”) at Audax Films, led by co-producer Andrew Kortschak and executive producer Walter Kortschak. Other producers include Dan O’Meara and Exhibit A Films’ Seth Gordon (who distributed “Mitt” as a Netflix original documentary) and executive producer Mary Rohlich (“Make Believe”). Exhibit A was responsible for bringing Lopez, Tweel, and Klein on board.
