Netflix to Emmys: ‘Orange Is the New Black’ Is a Comedy

/ Mar 12, 2014

Netflix plans to submit “Orange Is the New Black” as a comedy series at the 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The prison dramedy, created by Jenji Kohan (“Weeds”), tells the story of an upper-middle-class white woman who’s imprisoned due to some poor decisions she made during a particularly rebellious stage in her life. Across the 13-episode first season, the character, Piper, has to deal with a world that she’s not all-too-familiar with.

The dramedy is Netflix’s most-acclaimed original to date, scoring a 79 on Metacritic. “House of Cards,” Netflix’s other high-profile original, has a 76 on the reviews site.

This decision by Netflix means the streaming service has a chance to be nominated in the top two TV categories at the Emmys. “House of Cards” was famously nominated last year for Best Drama. “Orange Is the New Black,” which had also been submitted in the drama category, was snubbed by the Television Academy (though the show did score a Golden Globes nomination).

“Orange Is the New Black” sits in an interesting place for Netflix, as the show can easily be described as a drama (with comedic elements) or a comedy (with dramatic elements). That said, if the second season of the show, which will arrive on Netflix on June 6, lives up to the standards set by season one, Jenji Kohan and Netflix might see the podium at the Emmys.
