Netflix Welcomes ‘DreamWorks Dragons’ Kids Series to Originals Family
“How to Train Your Dragon” is the latest DreamWorks Animation franchise to get the original series treatment on Netflix.
The streaming service will debut new episodes of the toon series “DreamWorks Dragons,” featuring characters made popular by the hit film, beginning in the spring of 2015. Previous seasons of “DreamWorks Dragons” have aired on Cartoon Network.
Content will be available in all Netflix territories, including France and Germany, which are part of Netflix’s planned European expansion in 2014.
The “Dragons” rollout is part of an original content deal between Netflix and DreamWorks Animation, which will produce more than 300 hours of programming based on its popular film franchises. The first project to come out of this deal, “Turbo FAST,” debuted on the streaming service last fall. In March, Netflix announced three more original series based on characters from “Shrek,” “Madagascar,” and “Veggie Tales.”
The Netflix episodes of “DreamWorks Dragons” will bridge the gap between the the first feature film and its sequel that’s set to debut later this summer. It will introduce new characters, dragons, and locations, as well as reveal the stories behind some of the more important elements of the sequel.
As part of the deal, Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera, who voiced the two young Viking protagonists Hiccup and Astrid in the first feature film, will return for the Netflix series. They will be joined by Christopher Mintz-Plasse and TJ Miller, who will reprise their roles as Fishlegs and Tuffnut.
“The ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ franchise has been incredible to work with,” said Art Brown and Douglas Sloan, showrunners on “DreamWorks Dragons,” in a statement. “There is so much rich material available to us in the TV world that we can really dig in and create a different yet complementary experience to the feature films.”Tags: Animated Series, cartoon network, Dreamworks Animation, DreamWorks Dragons, How to Train Your Dragon, Netflix, netflix originals
