Netflix Will Exclusively Air ‘Fargo’ Miniseries in the Netherlands

/ Mar 20, 2014

If you want to watch “Fargo,” the TV miniseries inspired by the Oscar-winning film from the Coen brothers, in the US, you will be able to do so on FX, where it premieres on April 15. However, if you happen to be in the Netherlands, and are also excited to watch the show, then you’re going to need a Netflix subscription.

The streaming service has inked a pact with MGN International Television Distribution to be the exclusive home to “Fargo” in the Netherlands. Netflix will make new episodes available 24 hours after they premiere in the US.

This international distribution deal is similar to other ones struck by Netflix for shows like “Breaking Bad” and the upcoming “From Dusk Till Dawn” adaptation. Not really “Netflix Originals” (though Netflix does designate “From Dusk Till Dawn” as such outside the US), it’s more indicative of how Netflix is very much a digital cable channel in all of its territories.

Adapted for television by novelist Noah Hawley (“The Unusuals”), the TV version of “Fargo” is executive produced by Joel and Ethan Coen, Hawley, Warren Littlefield (former president of NBC Entertainment), and Geyer Kosinski. MGM Television and FX Productions serve as series producers, with MGM handling international distribution rights.

The show will focus on an all-new “true crime” story, complete with a new set of characters, though still enlisting the dark humor made famous in the original film, which won the Coen brothers an Academy Award for original screenplay.

Show has an all-star cast including Oscar-winner Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman (“Sherlock”), Colin Hanks (“Orange County”), Bob Odenkirk (“Breaking Bad”), Oliver Platt (“The West Wing”), Kate Walsh (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Glenn Howerton (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele (“Key & Peele”), and Adam Goldberg (“Dazed & Confused”). A standalone anthology, it will run for 10 hour-long episodes, with no immediate plans for future seasons.
