Netflix’s ‘Virunga’ Lands Oscar Nomination

/ Jan 15, 2015

For the second year in a row and the second time ever, Netflix has been nominated for an Academy Award. Once again, it’s in the documentary feature category, where Netflix’s “Virunga” will compete against “CitizenFour,” “Finding Vivian Maier,” “Last Days in Vietnam,” and “The Salt of the Earth.”

Directed by Orlando von Einsiedel and produced by Grain Media, “Virunga” follows a group of park rangers in Africa’s oldest national park, as they struggle to protect endangered mountain gorillas from poachers, militiamen, and other dangerous people. Executive producers include Leonardo DiCaprio.

“Virunga” was on the short list for Oscar consideration, alongside another digital-first feature film, “The Internet’s Own Boy,” which premiered on Vimeo. The film has also been nominated for a BAFTA, Britain’s top film prize.

Last year, Netflix got a nod for “The Square.”

The 87th annual Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, February 22, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.

Listed below are the nominees in the two short-film categories (live action and animation):

Best Live-Action Short Film

  • “Aya,” Oded Binnun and Mihal Brezis
  • “Boogaloo and Graham,” Michael Lennox and Ronan Blaney
  • “Butter Lamp (La Lampe Au Beurre De Yak),” Hu Wei and Julien Féret
  • “Parvaneh,” Talkhon Hamzavi and Stefan Eichenberger
  • “The Phone Call,” Mat Kirkby and James Lucas
