New Pee-Wee Herman Movie Might Come to Netflix

Pee-Wee Herman

Netflix is close to a deal to distribute an upcoming Pee-Wee Herman movie.

According to The Wrap, no deal is in place yet for the project, which could begin shooting as early as February 2015. The film is written by Pee-Wee himself Paul Reubens and comedian Paul Rust. A director hasn’t been named yet, though Judd Apatow is on board to produce via his company Apatow Productions.

A Netflix spokesperson cautioned that there’s no deal in place yet. But it wouldn’t be surprising for the film to show up on the streaming service; it’s already distributing the films “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” and “Big Top Pee-Wee,” as well as TV shows like “The Pee-Wee Herman Show” and two volumes of “Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.”

This particular film project was originally set up at Universal.

For Netflix, it’s unclear if the film would be part of its growing “originals” library. In 2014, the company announced a deal with The Weinstein Company to produce and distribute a sequel to “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” as well as a multi-picture deal with Adam Sandler.

Apatow, meanwhile, has another project in the works with Netflix. “Love,” an original romantic comedy series co-created by Apatow and Lesley Arfin (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Girls”), and produced by Apatow Productions, will debut on Netflix in 2016.
