NewFronts: VEVO Reaffirms Power of Music, Itself

“Music helps us make sense of the world” waxed Rio Caraeff, the President and CEO of VEVO, speaking from the stage last night at VEVO’s Newfront. “Music’s power brings us all together, connects us to something larger than ourselves.” Alexis Josephs, VEVO’s VP of Sales, called music the “zeitgeist of pop culture” and musicians the “biggest celebrities in the world.”

In fact, the entire VEVO NewFront presentation was an affirmation of “the power of music,” the phrase of the evening.

Sekou Andrews, who acted as MC and host between musical acts and speeches by executives, extolled “music’s unstoppable force” through powerful spoken poetry. “A songstress in E Flat” will cure cancer, rhymed Andrews, referencing recent music therapy research.

And what better way to show the power of music than to have live musical acts? Artists performing tonight included Carly Rae Jepsen, Jessie Ware and Kendrick Lamar.

It is this universal appeal of music then, that has allowed VEVO to become the largest music video platform in the world, collecting 232 million global viewers last year. 25 percent of those global views happen on smartphones, and VEVO’s library of 75,000 music videos gets more views than NBC, Hulu, Fox, CBS and Univision’s online videos combined. Other stats touted included six views on average per person.

Not content with exclusive rights to music videos by “the “biggest celebrities in the world,” VEVO now produces 20 original music-centric shows.  VP of original programming Scott Reich described the two newest, “Lyric Lines” and “The Comment Show” as “humorous and edgy” and “very different for us.”
