Nickelodeon and AwesomenessTV Bring Lia Marie Johnson’s ‘Terry the Tomboy’ to TV

Nickelodeon is dipping back into the YouTube well for an upcoming TV movie. The kids network will air “Terry the Tomboy,” a film based on a character created by YouTuber Lia Marie Johnson, on June 21.

It’s the second web-to-TV partnership between Nickelodeon and AwesomenessTV. The two networks already collaborate on the weekly sketch-comedy series “AwesomenessTV,” which in the past has featured the Terry character.

Lia Marie Johnson, known on YouTube for character bits and sketch comedy videos, has attracted more than 910,000 subscribers and 47 million views since launching her channel in December 2007.

She has also appeared in various episodes of the “Kids React,” “Teens React,” and “YouTubers React” web series from The Fine Brothers, who are currently working on a TV show for Nickelodeon based on that very franchise.

“Terry the Tomboy” will center on the main character, described as a confident, bacon-loving, and shower-deficient tomboy, and her first crush.

“Terry the Tomboy embraces one of Nickelodeon’s many hilarious characters that has experienced enormous popularity on our air and online,” said Russell Hicks, Nickelodeon’s president of content development and production, in a statement. “Our audience will soon see a new side to Terry’s offbeat world where she must decide between being true to herself — or changing to obtain acceptance from others.”

Alongside Johnson, “Terry the Tomboy” will also feature Charlie Depew (“The Amazing Spider-Man”) and fellow AwesomenessTV talent Noland Ammon and Audrey Whitby.

The film was written and directed by Wade Randolph (“The Comment Show,” “Rick & Morty”). Executive producers include AwesomenessTV chief Brian Robbins, Joe Davola (“One Tree Hill,” “Smallville”), and Shauna Phelan (“Side Effects,” “Supah Ninjas”).

In advance of the June 21 premiere (8pm ET), Nick will make behind-the-scenes and sneak peek content available on Nick.com/Tomboy. Johnson has also released a video (embedded below) to promote the movie’s release.
