Nippon TV Forms Digital Division to Oversee Hulu Japan, Other Digital Properties

Hulu gets rid of the plus

Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV has launched a new internal division to build out its online video businesses.

Called Cyber Business Strategy, the division will focus on the “commercialization” and monetization of Nippon TV’s digital media properties, including Hulu Japan and JoinTV.

Nippon TV acquired Hulu Japan in February to enter the SVOD business. CBS will now oversee the production and distribution of original content for the platform, as well as the creation of content that’s complementary to the broadcaster’s linear programming. The division will also expand Hulu Japan’s content lineup to include music, sports, and news, in addition to movies and dramas.

CBS will also look to popularize and monetize JoinTV, described as a “social interactive viewing” app for smartphones and TVs. The app, which connects TV shows to social networks, was developed by Nippon TV in 2012 with support from Facebook.

Overseeing all of this is Hiroyuki Oho, the current chairman of Hulu Japan who has been named divisional president for CBS.

“As part of this new division, we are looking to expand our internet-related businesses to include venture investments and M&A, as well as to foster relationships and develop a completely new business that integrates TV and the internet,” added Oho in a statement. “We also plan to bring together companies and students to create a laboratory that becomes a center for business development while strengthening our focus on monetization and further supporting our ad sales division.”
