‘NPC’: When a Non-Playable Character Fights Back (Trailer)
By this point, you or someone you know has played “Grand Theft Auto,” the massively popular open-world video game from Rockstar Games. In the game, players get a chance to vicariously live out all sorts of criminal fantasies, from bloody bank heists to assassinations to leading cops on a wild chase through the streets of a city, with no regard for pedestrian life (mainly because the game’s car controls are near impossible).
But what about those pedestrians? Those people have lives and feelings, too. That’s the premise behind a new independent “machinima” series on Machinima. The game, which takes place inside the world of “Grand Theft Auto 4,” follows the adventures of Mike, a NPC — a “non-playable character” — who is beginning to realize he lives in a video game in which he is not the main character. The main character, though, is a jerk who just randomly murdered his girlfriend, so Mike is now bent on killing the man even if it means potentially deleting the entire universe.
Created by Woody Tondorf (Machinima), Jeff Sloniker (“Attack of the Show”), and Andrew Hanson, and written by Sloniker and Hanson, “NPC” will run for 12 episodes on Machinima’s main 10.9-million-subbed YouTube channel.
“NPC” is directed by Tyrannicon, a video-gamer networked with Machinima. The series’ voice cast includes Oliver Vaquer (“Arrested Development,” “Bioshock Infinite”), Brea Grant (“Heroes,” “Friday Night Lights”), Adam Kovic and Bruce Greene from Inside Gaming, and Jimmy Wong (“Video Game High School”), among others.Tags: Animated, comedy, GTA, Machinima, Rockstar Games, Video Game, Video Gamers, youtube
