Number of Internet-Connected Video Devices to Exceed Human Population by 2017

/ Oct 8, 2013

That’s according to new research from the Broadband Technology Service at IHS, which predicts that 8.2 billion “internet-connected video devices” — which covers anything from PCs to tablets, Blu-ray players, and smart TVs — will be installed worldwide in 2017. In relation, IHS says the worldwide population is expected to grow to 7.4 billion by 2017.

IHS’ estimate would also be a 90% increase from the 4.3 million connected devices expected to be installed in 2013.

“In practice, ownership of internet-connected hardware will be concentrated among users whose homes are equipped with broadband connections,” said Merrick Kingston, a senior analyst at IHS, in a statement. “We’re quickly approaching a world where the average broadband household contains 10 connected, video-enabled devices.”

Unsurprisingly, the Asia-Pacific region will drive a lot of this growth. The IHS study expects the number of connected devices in the region to grow at a compound annual growth rate (from 2013 to 2017) at 20%, double that of what IHS expects for the more mature North American and Western European markets. Overall, Asia-Pacific will add 1.9 billion connected devices to the global installed base between 2013 and 2017, according to IHS.

As evidence of the steady decline in PC sales, the IHS study indicates that by the end of 2017, PCs will only comprise 23% of the connected installed base. That would be down from 93% in 2005. In terms of other types of connected devices, IHS expects smart TVs to account for 5%, consoles for 2%, and smartphones and tablets for a collective 67% of the global installed base.
