New Apple TV Apps from Yahoo, PBS Include Web-Original Content
Apple has added new video apps from Yahoo and PBS to its Apple TV device.
A month after launching on iOS devices, the new Yahoo Screen app designed for Apple TV offers access to Yahoo’s library of video content — from its slate of original comedy, music, and lifestyle shows to archived clips of “Saturday NIght Live,” “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and “The Colbert Report,” to Yahoo’s live coverage of news, concerts, and events.
The PBS app on Apple TV is somewhat in the traditional TV Everywhere mold, offering full-length episodes and clips from PBS shows like “American Masters,” “Frontline,” and “Masterpiece.” PBS says episodes of many current shows will be available within 24 hours after broadcast. Also, when users start the app, they will be asked to identify which region of the US they hail from in order to access local PBS station content. Similar to other PBS video apps, the one for Apple TV will also feature web-original videos and series created by PBS Digital Studios, the broadcaster’s digital content arm.
Apple has not-so-quietly been building out its Apple TV service, adding content from major content providers like ESPN and VEVO in the past several months. The company is said to be prepping the eventual launch of a connected TV product that could, optimistically speaking, change the TV-viewing experience. Though Apple itself has always been characteristically mum about its inevitable “TV play.”Tags: Apple, apple tv, Connected TVs, pbs, PBS Digital Studios, Yahoo!, Yahoo! Screen
