PBS Digital Studios Embarks on an ‘Art Assignment’ with John Green and His Wife

/ Feb 20, 2014

The Art Assignment,” a weekly web series from Vlogbrother, VidCon co-founder, and best-selling author John Green, his wife Sarah Urist Green, and PBS Digital Studios, debuts today on YouTube.

The show, which was announced last September, will highlight emerging and established artists working across the United States. It will draw upon Sarah Urist Green’s experience and knowledge of the world of art — she’s an art curator by day.

The goal is to bring art (and those who create it) to new audiences and make it less intimidating, according to PBS Digital Studios.

To do this, there will be an interactive component to the program. In each episode, an artist will create an assignment that serves as an open call for responses. The idea is for viewers to then share their artistic responses through photos or videos, which will be posted on YouTube, PBS.org, and other social media platforms.

The first episode, “Meet in the Middle,” which is embedded below, features artists Christopher Robbins and Douglas Paulson exploring the concept of the halfway point.

PBS Digital Studios had been wanting to collaborate with John Green and his wife for a while, according to Matt Graham, senior director of PBS Digital Studios. “They pitched us several ideas and this is the one that really nailed it,” he says. “The arts are a core topic area for us, and this approach struck as really fresh and engaging — plus the Greens have such an amazing track record with smart, informative content.”

New episodes of “The Art Assignment” will roll out every Thursday. The current plan is to release 40 episodes throughout 2014.
