Previews for YouTube Creators Bring Brand New Transparency

/ May 22, 2014

It’s always frustrating when our go-to sites seem to change form overnight with little to no warning. The shape-shifting Facebook, for instance, has thrown loyal users off on a frequent basis with changing formats and features. Lucky for YouTube users, the platform’s YouTube Creators channel has concocted a remedy for this, using videos to keep viewers up to date on what’s to come on the digital video site.

Matt Glotzbach, the project management director for creators at YouTube, narrates this short “Creator Preview,” produced by Portal A, wherein he and other YouTube employees tell creators what to expect next on the site. Between YouTube creator tools that people can access from their mobile devices to ad revenue that’s “bigger and better than before,” the hopeful improvements seek to appease creators who haven’t always been thrilled with the platform’s alterations.

In addition to increased monetization, the platform will adopt other business models, one of which feeds off of fan love. Making it easier for fans to contribute funding to the creators they love, YouTube will now permit this to take place on the site itself.

Over the past few months, YouTube’s also been building a new Creator Academy, a “one-stop shop for [creators] to access anytime, anywhere.” Glotzbach also calls attention to updates on comments, captions, and music in the “Creator Preview.” Comments, he assures us, will work more smoothly than last year, while captions will be generated by “the power of the crowd,” leading to translations of creators’ work in up to sixty, different languages. Lastly, more royalty-free tracks will tear down the red tape separating creators from the mash-ups and cover songs they seek to show the public.

Though the changes themselves are certainly noteworthy, the most exciting takeaway from the “Creator Preview” lies in its transparency. The fact that YouTube employees are taking the time to explain their plans to creators should make for a much smoother site (and happier talent).
