PS4 Supports Virtually Zero YouTube Accessibility at Launch

/ Nov 15, 2013

Those lucky enough to leave storefronts with the recently released Playstation 4 found themselves feeling slightly less fortunate as soon as they attempted to visit YouTube. Despite launching with 11 entertainment apps, including Amazon Instant Video, Crackle, and EPIX, the PS4 does not support YouTube integration at this point, according to Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios

Yoshida took to Twitter to respond to one user’s question about whether YouTube was accessible at launch. The Sony president responded, saying: “Not on Day 1, sorry for the inconvenience.”

In addition to not supporting a YouTube app at the moment, PS4’s web browser cannot access YouTube. Although it seems very unlikely that Playstation would not include YouTube support of any kind, the company has yet to announce when an app will be released.

This naturally puts Playstation at odds with its competitor Microsoft, which has been heavily marketing its Xbox One as less of a game console and more of a home entertainment device. However, Microsoft also recently announced its launch-ready entertainment apps with YouTube nowhere to be seen among them.

Both console developers have yet to unveil when YouTube apps or functionality will roll out. If it is any indicator, the YouTube app for PS3 was not released until August, 2013, almost seven years after the console’s initial launch.

YouTube, for its part, will want to be available on both consoles quickly. An April “Smart TV Usage” study by Displaysearch found that game consoles made up the majority of devices used to connect TVs to the web. Beating out media boxes (17.1%), game consoles accounted for 19.3% of devices used to connect streaming content to TVs. In other words, if YouTube wants to be in the living room and on the biggest screen in the house, it should probably be on the PS4 and Xbox One.

i’m really disappointed that they removed flash support on their web browser, especially since getting video streaming sites to permantely display in html5 is a real pain.
