‘Queer as Folk’ Creator to Develop Web Companion for New TV Dramas
“Queer as Folk” creator Russell T. Davies is developing content exclusively for the web that will air in conjunction with two new Channel E4 dramas, “Cucumber” and “Banana.” The web series, “Tofu,” alongside the two new dramas, will examine 21st Century gay life. Davies is notably known for his work on long running Channel 4 and Showtime drama “Queer as Folk” as well as his credits on the modern update of the “Doctor Who” series.
The web series and the TV dramas will, in large part, revolve around sexuality, as their names — “Tofu,” “Cucumber,” and “Banana” — are derived from a sexual study Davies once read that charted various levels of male arousal. While the TV programs will deliver fictional storylines, the companion web series will provide eight nonfiction shorts that examine the science and facts of 21st Century sex.
Davies will work with Channel 4 and its UK production branch RED on developing the dramas for international audiences.
Piers Wenger, Channel 4 head of drama commissioned the drama series. RED will create all three properties with Davies and Nicola Shindler, founder and EVP of RED executive producing. BBC Worldwide is set to distribute the TV dramas internationally.
