Ray William Johnson to Recast ‘Equals Three’ Instead of Canceling It (For Now)

/ Mar 13, 2014

Nevermind, Ray William Johnson’s flagship YouTube series “Equals Three” is no longer ending, it will just have a new creative team behind it.

In what was thought to be the last episode of the show, which published to Johnson’s YouTube channel yesterday, Johnson reiterated his reasons for exiting the program — because talking about viral videos on a daily basis is not creatively fulfilling for him anymore. “I’ve been making internet videos as a hobby for a long time and I feel I’ve outgrown it,” he says in the video.

Instead, Johnson is more interested in his other projects via his Runaway Planet venture, including the sci-fi web series “Riley Rewind,” which he claims received 10 million views on Facebook before the show was published to YouTube a day later.* There’s also the TV show that he has in the works with FX.

That said, after receiving a lot of push-back from fans asking him to not end “Equals Three,” the man isn’t able to let the thing die.

“Originally I wanted to retire the show completely — it’s actually still what I want,” says Johnson, “But I’ve gotten so much push-back from you guys and people around me that I’m going to try to keep the show going.”

In order to do that, Johnson says he’s shutting “Equals Three” down for a month or two to find a new host, and new writers and producers to replace him. Though when he does, and “Equals Three” comes back with a new creative team, and it doesn’t work (as some sequels tend to do), Johnson says he’ll probably cancel the show for good.

* Ten million views in one day off YouTube is pretty impressive, and if accurate, indicates that Johnson has an audience who’s willing to follow him to other platforms — something which many other YouTubers are thinking of.
