Ray William Johnson Sets End-Date for ‘=3’ — and It’s This Week
Ray William Johnson’s long-running show “Equals Three” is coming to an end. You already knew that. But what you might not have known is that it’s coming to a close this week. Announcing via his Facebook page, Johnson says the last episode of “Equals Three” will air this Wednesday, March 12.
In a tweet sent out by Johnson last December, he said he planned to retire his long-running show “sometime” in 2014.
This wasn’t fresh news to many who follow the YouTube star, who has more than 10.7 million subscribers on his main YouTube channel. The man has had a contentious relationship with YouTube (and, notoriously, businesses coming out of the YouTube ecosystem). To the effect that he released his acclaimed web series “Riley Rewind” on Facebook first before distributing it on YouTube.
In a recent “Runaway Thoughts” podcast, which Johnson co-hosts with his wife Anna Akana, the creator provided additional thoughts on why he was ending “Equals Three,” saying: “I’m getting to that point where, not only am I burnt out, but I feel like I need to move on. To put into context, I’ll be 33 in August, and the show… is a performance, and it’s like a performance as much as anything is a performance.”
With Johnson focusing more on mature content, including stuff like “Riley Rewind,” it makes sense that he would look to move on from “Equals Three,” which breaks down his thoughts (in this character he’s created) about three viral videos every day. Each episode of the show is guaranteed to pull in a couple million views.
It will be interesting to see if or how the change affects his channel stats. It’s not like there won’t be any more regular programming from Johnson; every episode of “Runaway Thoughts” can be found on the channel.Tags: =3, Anna Akana, Equals Three, Ray William Johnson, Runaway Planet, Runaway Thoughts, youtube, YouTube creator
