Ray William Johnson to Officially End ‘=3’ in 2014

/ Dec 30, 2013

Ray William Johnson is retiring his hit YouTube show “=3” in 2014. The YouTube creator writes via Twitter:

Johnson has had an openly contentious relationship with YouTube for some time now and even threatened to leave the platform earlier this year. With the release of his directorial debut “Riley Rewind,” Johnson partially made good on these threats, uploading the web series to Facebook video one day prior to a YouTube release. Now, with his departure from “=3” it will be interesting to see how and if the creator remains on YouTube.

Johnson isn’t the only creator ending a flagship YouTube-based program, though. Earlier in December, Philip DeFranco, owner of SourceFed and “The Philip DeFranco Show” tweeted that 2014 “is going to be the last year of the ‘PDS.’”

DeFranco has also had a troubled past with YouTube and the multi-channel network infrastructure in particular. In a recent upload, DeFranco compared YouTube to an alcoholic father, saying: “We don’t know if he’s going to take us to Disneyland or slap us in the face or both.” DeFranco’s metaphor comes at a time when YouTube and its partners are currently in the mix over a series of copyright violations aimed at gaming channels. In response, DeFranco has stated that he has begun shifting his digital video empire elsewhere. Specifically, DeFranco cites gradually moving content to SourceFed.com, where he claims 200-250K people visit each day. Of course, DeFranco also states that he does not plan to leave YouTube entirely. He explains that in three years he may only be on the platform “a little bit.”

Like DeFranco, Johnson surely has plans for life post-YouTube. It’s unclear, however, whether the creator will place a larger focus on his production studio Runaway Machine or if he will seek opportunities outside of the digital landscape.

I think this is good. Youtube needs to have some competition because he fact that it’s become a monopoly for online video has led it to becoming an incredibly sold out site. (I’ve had 5 minute ads for 2 minute videos) Don’t get me started on the copyright violation crap. The simple fact is that copyright is/will become a part of our society whether we like it or not.
I just find it funny because when someone downloads a picture without consent, nobody panics. But when someone uploads 1 little movie in shit quality… Well everyone just loses their minds.
