RLJ Entertainment Launches SVOD Service for Urban Movies
Content on the streaming service includes work released by RLJ Entertainment’s One Village brand as well as that from the company’s Image independent feature film library. In addition to movies, UMC will feature stand-up comedy by Kevin Hart and Charlie Murphy along with documentaries like “I Ain’t Scared of You: A Tribute to Bernie Mac.” Stage productions will also appear on the channel, such as David E. Talbert’s “What My Husband Doesn’t Know.”
“UMC was designed so that the African American and urban creative community could directly reach consumers in a way that removes many of the restrictions associated with the legacy content development and distribution models,” said Robert Johnson, creator of RJ Entertainment (and founder of BET), in a statement.
UMC will offer a free trial for subscribers up until February 4. As a special introductory offer, a monthly subscription will go for $2.99, while a year will cost $29.99. However, the true subscription cost will ultimately be $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year.
Traci Otey Blunt just joined the entertainment company as the corporate executive vice president, in part to head UMC’s promotion. Blunt comes from The RJL Companies, which Johnson also founded.
