Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Discovery Form New Digital Studio
Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, the producing team behind “24,” “Arrested Development,” “Apollo 13,” and “A Beautiful Mind,” have launched New Form, a joint venture with Discovery Communications to produce digital programming.
Led by Kathleen Grace, who’s been hired as the digital studio’s chief creative officer, New Form will focus on developing scripted and unscripted shows for digital platforms. Discovery will then look to partner with “key distributors and brands” to distribute these shows across digital platforms. In some cases, down the road, Discovery says New Form-produced shows could air on Discovery and its partner platforms globally.
“We are excited and proud to have the most accomplished and creative minds in all of film and television investing with us in New Form,” said David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discovery Communications, in a statement. “Brian and Ron are best-in-class storytellers, and we look forward to developing compelling programming for today’s digital viewers. This creative powerhouse, coupled with Discovery’s strong programming expertise and our ability to engage viewers across our global platforms, is an unparalleled combination.”
“Technology is rapidly changing the entertainment landscape for studios, producers, and audiences, and Ron and I could not think of a better partner to invest with than Discovery to expand beyond film and television and enter into the digital frontier,” added Grazer.
Grace was most recently the head of creative development for YouTube Space LA. She had joined YouTube when the company had acquired Next New Networks, where she was VP of production and programming, in 2011.
New Form is an independent venture between Discovery, Grazer, Howard, and Craig Jacobson, Ed Wilson, Jim Wiatt, Michael Rosenberg, and CAA. This means it’s not tied to Discovery Digital Networks, Discovery’s digital division that oversees platforms like Revision3, Animalist, and TestTube. New Form will be headquartered in LA.
