Shay Carl Comes Full Circle with New Series ‘ShayFV’

/ Oct 19, 2014

ShayFV,” a collaboration between YouTube’s famous family vlogger, Shay Carl, and “America’s Funniest Home Videos” launches today on (“AFV” started its YouTube channel with Maker Studios, after all).

When it comes to content like this, you almost have to wonder, “How did this not happen sooner?” What the “Shaytards” do on YouTube Monday through Friday has so much in common with “AFV” — both programs showcase real families doing wacky things in their everyday lives.

VideoInk caught up with Shay to ask him about the connection, one that he didn’t deny. “’AFV’ had a huge influence on me. Whether I purposefully started doing daily family vlogs from seeing ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos,’ I don’t think I thought of it at the time, but I grew up watching the show since I was nine years old,” he said.

Shay started videotaping himself and his family since he was a kid, bringing a camcorder around as he and his brother and friends rollerbladed, went skiing, or played on a trampoline—all prime activities to capture great “fail” videos. “We always wanted to have a clip on ‘AFV,’” Shay explained, “and be famous and be on TV without having to be actors.”

Since Shay’s certainly achieved this in his adulthood, “AFV” ended up connecting with him through Maker Studios. The collaboration comes as “AFV” celebrates its 25th anniversary on the air (a celebration that spans other YouTube creators, as well), and the program naturally found that it shared the Shaytards’ demographic. Together they came up with “ShayFV,” letting Shay take the reigns of the show. In other words, the people over at “AFV” fully trusted Shay to come up with content that his audience would embrace. After all, if you create something as personal as a family vlog on YouTube, you’ve got to know your audience pretty well.

As a result, “ShayFV,” in Shay’s words, “is kind of like a combination between the Shaytards, ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos,’ and ‘Mystery Science Theater.’” Thus, you can expect antics from Shaytards family members, clips akin to what you’ll see on “AFV,” and a running commentary from Shay and his kid to go along with the “home videos.”

Six episodes of “ShayFV” have been shot so far, and they’ll begin rolling out every Sunday following today’s debut. Each episode will show up on, the Shaytards channel, and the “AFV” YouTube channel. “This is like a bonus show for our viewers on Sundays,” Shay described, as the Shaytards only post during the business week.

“ShayFV” will span 17 total episodes, each of which will run between three and five minutes. You can watch episode one right here.
