AT&T to Launch Superhero Series, Starring YouTubers, on Snapchat
Yesterday, Snapchat launched Discover, a video discovery feature on the app filled with content from major media companies like Vice and CNN. Now, the app will continue to expand far beyond disappearing user-generated social videos with its first scripted series, “SnapperHero,” from AT&T.
The series is a play on the hero genre and stars various YouTube, Vine, and Snapchat stars, including Freddie Wong, Harley Morenstein, Anna Akana, Jasmeet Singh (JusReign), Simone Shepherd, and Shaun McBride (Shonduras), who is also the show’s creative director. It’s directed by visual-effects YouTube stars Corridor Digital.
The plan behind the series is that each of these popular creators will deliver their respective audiences to the show, which will span 12 episodes across four weeks…sometime soon (no specific launch date has been set other than “early 2015″). The content will “primarily” live on Snapchat, meaning that some might end up on the starring YouTubers’/Viners’ channels.
“SnapperHero” is produced by Fullscreen and Astronauts Wanted, so it’s possible content will wind up on their platforms, too. As you know by now, AT&T partially owns Fullscreen through its joint venture with the Chernin Group, Otter Media. AT&T has also previously worked with Astronauts Wanted. The two companies partnered on multiple seasons of the social-media reality series “@SummerBreak,” which made use of a variety of social media platforms so viewers could have a more interactive role in the story.
“SnapperHero” will offer something similar, giving fans a chance to give their ideas on the superheroes identities, costumes, backstories, and nemeses. The audience can interact with the series through the handle @SnapperHero on Twitter, Instagram, and, of course, Snapchat.Tags: @SummerBreak, Anna Akana, astronauts wanted, at&t, chernin group, Corridor Digital, Freddie Wong, fullscreen, Harley Morenstein, jasmeet singh, otter media, shaun mcbride, simone shepherd, snapchat, snapperhero
