Social Media Epidemic Marks Plot of Amazon’s Latest Pilot
Amazon adds another video to its third pilot season. Revealed today, the hour-long pilot for thriller “Hysteria” will debut later this year on Amazon Instant Video, joining a slate of other original shows including big name actors like Ron Perlman, Adam Brody and Selma Blair.
Starring Mena Suvar of “American Beauty” as the show’s protagonist, “Hysteria” will take place in Austin, Texas, where there’s been an outbreak of a growing epidemic that seems to spread via social media. This pilot, along with those of previously announced “Really,” “The Cosmopolitans,” and “Hand of God,” will throw itself at the mercy of Amazon customers, who will help determine which of the pilots they would like watch as full series. Pilots with the most positive feedback will become shows available on Amazon Prime Instant Video.
Written by Shaun Cassidy, “Hysteria” is executively produced by Cassidy, Adam Schroeder, Sharon Hall, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Bryan Zuriff, and the pilot’s director, Otto Bathurst. Bathurst recently won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts award for work on the mini-series “Peaky Blinders.”
“I can think of no better platform than Amazon to tell a story that explores the price of fear and the very real threat of viral connection becoming contagion,” said Cassidy of the show’s social media-based epidemic. In “Hysteria,” the epidemic first manifests in a girls’ competitive dance team in the form of violent outbursts and spasms, harkening to the show’s name.
Supposing Amazon viewers like the hour-long pilot, “Hysteria” will end up on the platform’s original programming slate, which includes “The After,” “Bosch,” “Alpha House,” and “Transparent.”Tags: Amazon, amazon original series, Amazon Prime Instant Video, amazon third pilot season, hand of god, hysteria, mena suvari, really, shaun cassidy, social media, the cosmopolitans, thriller
