SourceFed: Be Quick, Have a Personality
SourceFed has the distinction of being one of the most successful channels to come out of YouTube’s original, funded programming initiative. Currently sitting at more than 1.05 million subscribers, SourceFed regularly serves up commentary about trending news stories from a roster of pretty funny and engaging hosts, including Joe Bereta, Elliott Morgan, Lee Newton, Steve Zaragoza, Trisha Hershberger, and Meg Turney.
And that’s the thing, it’s a personality-driven news show that focuses less on breaking the news and more on providing commentary on topics the SourceFed team finds interesting, according to channel/show creator Philip DeFranco (who hosts a similar show on his own channel, which currently reaches nearly 2.75 million subscribers). “I consider SourceFed and ‘The Philip DeFranco Show’ to be ‘infotainment’ — news with opinion and humor,” says DeFranco.
This makes having a personality — something “for people to latch on to” — an essential quality for a host, according to DeFranco, even if it means opening up the possibility for the audience to sometimes disagree with the opinion. “It’s a conversation rather than something you passively watch,” he says — this makes authenticity all the more important.
While ‘The Philip DeFranco Show’ has one episode per day, SourceFed usually pushes out five shorter videos every Monday to Friday, with a turnaround time of 1-2 hours from ideation to completion, according to DeFranco.
As for best practices when it comes to shooting topical content such as “infotainment”? DeFranco recommends: “Don’t overstay your welcome. Get what you need to say out in an entertaining way and BE GONE WITH YOU! The longer you stretch something out, the longer time they have to realize they don’t like you.”Tags: Elliott Morgan, Joe Bereta, Lee Newton, Meg Turney, philip defranco, SourceFed, Steve Zaragoza, The Philip DeFranco Show, Trisha Hershberger
