Telemundo Opens FLUENCY, A Multi-Platform Content Studio

/ May 9, 2013

In keeping with the popular trend among NBCUniversal-owned properties this year, Telemundo announced their new digital studio today, which they are calling — in all caps — FLUENCY. The Los Angeles based multi-platform production studio will focus on making high-quality programming for both Spanish and English-speaking audiences.

“Telemundo Media is doubling down on multiple platforms, distribution and content hubs to address the explosive growth of this market,” said Jacqueline Hernández, COO at Telemundo Media, in a press release announcing FLUENCY.  “We remain dedicated to addressing the needs of our viewers and our advertising partners with compelling content that breaks the mold and offers Hispanic audiences the chance to watch what they want, when they want.”

FLUENCY’s new content promises to hit various genres, including science fiction and adventure. Series currently in development include the romantic comedy with “a fantasy twist” called “La Buena Mala,” (The Good Bad One) and “ISA,” which is described as “a sci-fi coming-of-age story.”

The multi-platform studio will also develop projects that feature both established TV stars and those who have gained prominence on social media sites like YouTube. So, just to reiterate, a television company is looking to work with “digital-natives.” Sound familiar?

FLUENCY could also serve as an incubator of sorts for future Telemundo TV shows, which is not unlike deals we have seen this year between Fox and WIGS, or RSA and Machinima.

NBCUniversal will handle distribution for FLUENCY. Per the announcement, this means programs developed by FLUENCY could show up anywhere from “television, to subscription video on demand, from electronic sell to mobile networks.”

Telemundo isn’t the only Spanish-language American television network making shows for online audiences. Univision — the number one Spanish-language American television network — is responsible for the web-novela “Arranque de Pasión, la Historia de Ela” (Start of Passion, History of Ela), which follows Ela as she tries to decide between two brothers named Czech and Jordi. The series is available on UVideos, Univision’s digital video portal that is available online and across a number of devices.
