7 Things You Didn’t Know About ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on YouTube

/ Aug 26, 2014

Ice Bucket Challenge

Last time we checked in on the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge,” the campaign to raise money and awareness for ALS, aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease, through nominations that encourage friends to either dump buckets of ice water on their heads or donate $100 to the campaign, we saw that over 16,253 relevant videos had been uploaded to YouTube in a matter of 30 days, resulting in more than 23.1 million total views. Let’s see what’s been going on with the challenge since…

You may just be surprised at the new information, courtesy of video analytics and marketing platform Tubular Labs:

1. Now, ALS Ice Bucket Challenge videos have accumulated 695 million views of 293,000 different YouTube videos.

2. However, it seems as if the view count may have hit its peak. While Sunday, August 24 generated 87 million views, Monday (when this data was collected) had been shaping up to reach about 60 million. YouTube engagements are similarly on the downswing.

3. At the same time, people continue to accept the challenge, resulting in a steady, continuous stream of Ice Bucket Challenge videos. Not only are people continuing to dump ice water on their heads and post videos of it on YouTube, they’re also remixing these videos and making compilations of their favorites.

Here’s one example of such a mashup—it includes celebrities completing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and runs for one hour with zero repeats:

4. Also last we looked, Bill Gates’s video held the number one spot on the challenge chart for videos uploaded in the last 30 days. Now, Cristiano Ronaldo’s video has taken over number one, with Charlie Sheen’s coming in second place.

5. It may be hard to believe, but celebrities can also post videos of themselves donating money instead of dumping ice over their heads. You can watch Patrick Stewart do this in video number six of the most popular ALS Ice Bucket Challenges.

6. In spite of the large number of celebrities participating the challenge, very few of them have their own YouTube channels. Most of the times, fans or celebrity-watch channels like TMZ (in Charlie Sheen’s case, at least) upload these videos on the celebrities’ behalves.

7. As before, North Americans are responsibility for the majority of ALS Ice Bucket Challenge video fanfare. The United States alone generates a whopping 72%, while Canadians are getting further in on the action, rising from 6% to 10% since we last reported.
