Industry Reactions to Zappin vs. Maker Studios

So, yesterday was interesting. Maker Studios isn’t a stranger to controversy, having been involved in multiple disputes with talent and industry people (both in the public and behind the scenes) since the company was founded in 2009. So when news broke yesterday that one of Maker’s embattled co-founders, and former chief executive, was suing the company for essentially “ousting” him, it had a certain air of inevitability.

Aereo Updates

Aereo To Launch in Chicago in September

Aereo, Inc., today announced plans to launch its groundbreaking online television technology in the Chicagoland area on September 13, continuing the company’s nationwide rollout. The expansion to Chicago will cover 16 counties across Illinois and Indiana. Aereo’s technology is currently available to consumers residing in the New York City, Boston and Atlanta designated market areas (DMA).

TouchCast App Puts Pro-Grade Video Editing in iPad Users’ Hands

Released today on iTunes, TouchCast is a new video-creation platform that places all the tools of an editing studio in one free iPad app. TouchCast has two elements: One allows users to watch and interact with videos via the service (“Touch”), the other is the studio/production features designed for creators to shoot and publish interactive videos (“Cast”).

Flowboard for iPad Now Lets You Add YouTube Videos and PDFs to Your Multimedia Mixes

RTL Group Invests $36 Million in BroadbandTV

Today brought another huge investment in a YouTube-based network from a large traditional media player. Except, the MCN receiving $36 million is one that you might not have heard of. BroadbandTV, based out of Vancouver, is the fifth-largest MCN with a network of more than 7,800 channel partners altogether averaging 800 million views per month.

Viki Moves In On Chinese Audiences With Two New Video Deals

Video sharing site, Viki, is continuing its push into China with two new video distribution deals with Chinese video-on-demand sites, LeTV and Xunlei Kankan. This move follows its first distribution deal, set up last July, with Renren—also known as the Facebook of China. That deal with Renren was Viki’s first such agreement with a third party to serve videos on an external site, and saw Renren setting up a dedicated channel called VikiZone on its site.

AOL Holding Auditions in NY for “AOL Live”

AOL plans to debut “AOL Live,” a daily live-streaming service later this summer. To get started, the company is holding auditions in New York today and tomorrow to find “the most talented and passionate news, sports, weather, entertainment, and Internet-y storytellers in the world.” Auditions run from 5am to 10am on each day at the company’s headquarters in Manhattan (770 Broadway).

Maker Studios, besides fending off a lawsuit from former CEO Danny Zappin, is launching its own website to host its videos later this year as an alternative to YouTube.
