Scripps Networks’ to Debut a Dozen Online Originals
Following our scoop in April that Scripps Networks was readying a new Hulu-like platform called for launch in early June, VideoInk has learned more about the network’s programming slate, which is set to debut this coming Friday, says a source close to the platform development. Scripps Networks is the parent company for lifestyle cable channels DIY, HGTV and The Food Network. Upon further digging the site is already live and here’s their welcome video:



YouTube’s Mobile Ad Revenue Triples as Mobile Views Reach 40% in the US

Mobile is quickly becoming the new normal for YouTube, and it’s starting to pay off: 40 percent of all of the service’s video views in the U.S. are now coming from mobile devices, a YouTube spokesperson told GigaOM on Wednesday. Worldwide, mobile is now responsible for 25 percent of all of YouTube’s video views. This, and the roll-out of new mobile apps, has helped YouTube to triple its mobile ad revenue in the past six months, according to Bloomberg, which got YouTube VP of Sales Lucas Watson go on the record about the mobile growth. Bloomberg is also guesstimating that “as much as $350 million in sales probably came from mobile video ads” in Google’s last quarter alone. However, that number isn’t coming from Google, and it’s based on a few assumptions from analysts, so I would take it with a grain of salt.



AT&T May Join the Chernin Group to Bid on Hulu

AT&T may link up with the Chernin Group to make a joint bid for Hulu, reports AllThingsD citing unnamed sources close to the telecommunications company. If the discussions go through, the partnership would give the Chernin Group a financial boost as it competes with six other bidders for the streaming video site. The other potential buyers are pay TV operators DirecTV and Time Warner Cable; private equity firms KKR, Guggenheim Digital and Silverlake Partners (along with talent agency William Morris Endeavor); and Yahoo.

NBCUniversal Eyeing Women-Oriented YouTube MCNs

Looks like another traditional media powerhouse wants to be involved with those succeeding on YouTube. According to Lori Conkling, NBCUniversal’s executive vice president of strategy and business development, the company is looking into purchasing YouTube MCNs across multiple genres, especially those dedicated to women. Per Variety, which reported on her comments from the VideoNuze Online Video Advertising Summit in New York this week, Conkling said: ”We are looking across the spectrum to see which [online networks] align with the verticals that are important to us.” NBCUniversal sees the “opportunity” in buying or investing in YouTube-based media companies, she added. ”We want to be where the audience is. We want to be relevant.”

The group (RED) is raising awareness about AIDS on the 32nd anniversary of the discovery of the disease by attempting to set a world record on Vine, Twitter’s new video social app. Yesterday was the anniversary, and Vine users were able to record and share videos until 11:59 last night. (RED) encouraged users to include the hashtag #REDWorldRecord, so that collectively, the organization and users can set the record for most Vine videos posted in one day. It is unclear, as of now, whether they set a world record.
