Digital video industry news today

Netflix will be available in France by the end of the year. Next year, subscribers in the country will also have access to the first French original series from the streaming company.

Netflix has ordered “Marseille,” an eight-episode political drama from Paris-based Federation Entertainment, the company behind hit French series “Dolmen” and “Sous le Soleil.” The drama will focus on the story of Robert Taro, mayor of the titular city for 25 years, who in the coming elections has to face the man he chose as his heir.

Why Hollywood Can’t Ignore Digital Distribution

Ignore, for a second, about how more and more producers are creating content for digital platforms. Hollywood studios and networks — those still generating most of their revenue from traditional films and TV shows — are also increasingly adapting to digital, because they have to.

The Rise of Native Ads and the Importance of Being Human

The announcement of that some of the brightest VCs in Silicon Valley at Andreessen Horowitz are investing $50 million in BuzzFeed has stunned many. Why? Because the company is regularly dismissed by others for its lightweight “click-bait” type of content it is widely known for. But Chris Dixon at Andreessen Horowitz, who is also joining BuzzFeed’s board, explained the rationale behind the investment on his blog.

Future of Broadcast TV Under Scrutiny: ‘Everyone Should Be Reevaluating’

The future of broadcast television is everywhere on the minds of television and media executives across the industry. Even Emmy host Seth Meyers opened the awards show on Monday with a well-aimed shot at the elephant in the room, skewering a certain absurdity to broadcast television holding an awards ceremony and “giving all the awards to cable shows and Netflix.”

‘Party Down’ will stream exclusively on Hulu starting this Friday

Here’s something to do for this Labor Day weekend that doesn’t involve inclement weather: stay inside and watch Party Down on Hulu. Starz’s cult comedy ran for two seasons starting in 2009, earning critical acclaim but never finding a large enough audience to keep going. The show enjoyed a brief stint on Netflix before getting pulled a few months before Starz left Netflix entirely.

Instagram recently released its new Hyperlapse app for creating silky smooth timelapses in a hurry, and now we know how the technology behind the app actually works.

In the past, creating moving timelapses has been an expensive process that required camera rigs for video stabilization. But by using the gyroscopes already inside your smartphone, Instagram’s Hyperlapse app is able to eliminate the jitters usually found in smartphone videos.

Aereo Updates

Others Like Aereo?

Now that the federal courts have put a stop to Aereo, others are trying to snap up those customers, including Granite Broadcasting Corp., which owns 14 broadcast stations. Granite has partnered with London tech firm Motive Television to launch “a new device and service that enables iOS and Android tablet users to watch broadcast TV without any kind of Internet connection whatsoever,” according to FierceCable.com. If the end-user places the “palm-size digital TV antenna, tuner, and digital recorder” within 100 feet of his or her tablet, it can receive local over-the-air broadcast signals. For now, Tablet TV is being beta-tested in San Francisco.
