Ads Are More Popular Than Ever on YouTube, Says YouTube

According to data just released by YouTube, video ads are getting more popular on the site — seriously.

As brands start pouring more dollars into digital, it seems that they’re putting additional emphasis on creating entertaining content specifically for the medium — because viewers are demonstrating that they will watch branded content as long as it’s entertaining.

How can one be so sure? According to YouTube, the top ads on its site in 2014 were 50% longer than they were the previous year, and yet, viewers were watching them at a 50% higher rate.

On average, the top 10 most popular YouTube ads run for three minutes, suggesting that people view them as videos worth watching in their own right and not simply because they’re forced to before their preferred video content begins.

Other figures confirm the growing popularity of branded content online, such as the fact that people watched over 1 billion minutes of the top ads in 2014, totaling 425 million views (compared to just 200 million in 2012, when YouTube launched its “Ads Leaderboard”).

Perhaps part of the reason behind such increased popularity has to do with YouTuber collaborations. More creators have worked with brands on videos on the platform than ever before, coming out with popular, original content as seen in these top collaborative brand/creator videos below:
