TouchCast, IAWTV, and Big Screen Little Screen Launch Pilot Contest for Online Video Creators

/ Oct 11, 2013

TouchCast, the mobile video platform that wants to change how video is created and interacted with on the web, is partnering with the International Academy of Web Television and Big Screen Little Screen to launch a new “pilot” contest for online video creators.

A quick reminder on TouchCast: The app is a video-authoring tool which allows independent creators (and enterprise companies) to produce interactive video content, in most cases, similar in visual style to what you see on news broadcasts. The app offers an array of pre-production tools as well as these things called vApps (video apps), interactive elements that creators can insert into their videos. For example, a vApp for a Twitter feed would allow the viewer to scroll through a Twitter feed that the creator has pre-selected while watching the video. Other types of vApps include the ability to browse web-pages and even watch videos.

As you can tell, this kind of app can be useful for the vlogger-types on YouTube.

So this new “pilot” contest, which is called TouchCasting Call (get it?), is primarily designed to get independent creators to produce vlog-style content for TouchCast, and in doing so, probably drive new users to the app.

Those interested can submit a pilot for a video series across five categories: Vlogger Rant; Geek Culture; “Shop-o-haulic”; How-To/DIY; and Best Use of Instagram. To submit, creators have to download TouchCast’s free iPad app and tag their submissions with “TouchCastingCall.”

The submission process will run through December 11, after which a group of judges will pick five finalists, one in each category. The finalists will then receive $1,000 to produce an additional five episodes of that show for distribution TouchCast. The five finalists will also compete for the grand prize of an additional $3,000 in production support.

The judges panel, as picked by TouchCast, the IAWTV, and Big Screen Little Screen, includes YouTuber Liam Dryden, online video producer Jenni Powell, Indie Intertube’s April Grant, “What’s Trending” creator/producer/host Shira Lazar, Soraya Darabi, and TouchCast founder Edo Segal. The idea is that each of these judges are an expert in one of the five categories, and together they will be able to select winners based on creative approach, production quality, and general entertainment value.

As part of the deal with IAWTV and BSLS, the two organizations will open up and promote the pilot program to their respective membership

Winners of the contest will be announced on December 20.
