The Truth About Trending: YouTube Reveals Its Biggest Secret

As most YouTube watchers, you believe that Psy’s “Gagnam Style” is a genuine Korean pop hit and Rebecca Black’s “Friday” is the work of a misguided young female with too much money…right? If that’s the case, be prepared for your understanding of the trending world to turn upside down.

In fact, YouTube itself has been responsible for the above two viral videos, along with other favorites like “Harlem Shake.” Carefully crafted in the YouTube Trends Laboratory, such videos were made using a special “secret” formula that almost guarantees viral trending.

Surprised? Don’t be for long, because YouTube wants you to get over the shock and participate in the next viral trend on their platform. Anyone in the YouTube community is now invited to submit their ideas for the next big thing! The top three favorites will result in video creations by YouTube from the YouTube Space in LA.

In the meantime, since YouTube’s given up the ghost on their viral creations, the video platform wants to give audiences a sneak peak into the viral trends of 2014. Here are three videos concocted in the YouTube Trends Lab that you won’t be able to miss as their viewership soars this year.

First off, “Clocking”: Described by YouTube as “the new planking,” it entails using your arms as clock hands to tell time in a public setting. Whether you’re out on the street or in the office during lunch break, you’ll likely catch onto this handy (pun intended) trend.

Then there’s the “Glub Glub Water Dance”: Choreographed in the Trends Lab, this dance includes pouring water over yourself with wild hand flapping gestures as dubstep and dancehall keep the beat in the background. Sounds crazy, but it’s got to have mass appeal if it was made in the lab.

Lastly, “Kissing Dad”: This meme-to-be requires that you have a dad and that he is uncomfortable with acts of affection. Kiss your father on the cheek or forehead, and these videos will focus on his reaction. Good thing dads are all so frigid–responses to their children’s kindness will be freaking hilarious.

If none of those pique your interest, remember you have the opportunity to input your own ideas to YouTube so they can possibly make your trendy vision go viral. As mentioned, their top three favorites will earn videos created in the YouTube Space in LA.

Oh, and one more thing: Aprils Fools! We can all relax that there’s no YouTube “Big Brother” molding our most pervasive trends. However, this is too bad for Rebecca Black. Turns out she can’t pin the genius behind “Friday” on YouTube, after all. (And we all can’t blame the YouTube Trends Laboratory for using their magic formula to make us watch it.)
