Netflix Arrives in Cuba

Netflix has opened its doors to Cuba. Starting today, Cubans with internet connections and access to international payment methods will be able to subscribe to the service. As access to the web and credit and debit cards become more widely available in the country, Netflix expects to be more widely available, the company said.

The number of Americas households paying for TV through cable, satellite or fiber services declined in 2013, the first full year drop in paying subscribers . The saturated pay TV market peaked in 2011 with 100.9M households, a figure expected to drop to 94.6M by 2017. Full year 2014 figures have yet to be released, but underlying trends are indicating that current market leaders, such as Comcast and Time Warner, who fail to innovate, could become obsolete.

Dish’s Online TV Debuts, Targets Cord-Cutters, Cord-Nevers

Dish Network’s online television service, Sling TV, debuted Monday as a way to entice people who have dropped their cable or satellite TV service or never had one. It’s cheaper than a traditional pay-TV package, but it comes with fewer channels. Anyone with an Internet connection in the U.S. can sign up.

One strange step in that direction took placeMonday as Netflix announced new operations in the country. “Starting today,” the company said in a statement, “people in Cuba with Internet connections and access to international payment methods will be able to subscribe to Netflix.”
