Indie filmmaker Hal Hartley’s latest film, “Ned Rifle,” is set to premiere in select theaters nationwide on April 1. On the same day, the film will also be available online exclusively via Vimeo On Demand.

Written and directed by Hartley, “Ned Rifle” closes a trilogy that started in 1998 with “Henry Fool,” and was followed in 2007 with “Fay Grim.” Across three movies, Hartley spins a story about the Grim family of Woodside Queens whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of a self-proclaimed genius named Henry Fool. The films attempt to illustrate America’s grappling with ideas, art, politics, and religion over the course of 20 years.

“Ned Rifle” stars Liam Aiken, Martin Donovan, Aubrey Plaza, Parker Posey, Thomas Jay Ryan, and James Urbaniak, and was produced by Hartley and Matthew Myers with Possible Films, LLC.

On Vimeo, the film will be available for $19.95 (to download and own) or $4.95 (to rent for 24 hours). This is the second film Vimeo has agreed to do a day-and-date release with, following a deal the video site secured with the filmmakers behind the ecological documentary “Planetary” earlier this week.

Theatrically, the film will star its limited rollout in New York City at the IFC Center on April 1, followed by openings in LA, San Francisco, Toronto, Boston, Seattle, and other cities on later dates.

“Ned Rifle” is an official SXSW selection and will screen in the Vimeo Theater at the festival.
