SXSW: Vimeo to Release ‘Planetary’ Day-and-Date with Theatrical Premiere
The film, which makes its world premiere at SXSW, will be released worldwide on Earth Day, April 22. It’s the first time Vimeo is participating in a day-and-date release model, a practice that’s being increasingly used by distributors in an effort to reach a wider audience across the globe. “Planetary” is available for pre-order via Vimeo On Demand for $12.99.
The debut feature from Planetary Collective, produced in association with Reconsider, “Planetary” is a follow-up to the award-winning short film “Overview,” which has accumulated nearly 7 million views on the video site to date. That film focused on astronauts’ stories of what it means to see the Earth from space, and its success is credited for the decision to make a feature-length version.
“Planetary” mixes footage from NASA Apollo missions and other breathtaking images of the world with interviews from social, science, and educational experts to show how our worldview is affecting life on our planet. It’s directed by Guy Reid, written and edited by Steve Watts Kennedy, and executive produced by Paul Hawken and Stephen Apkon.
The distribution partnership and deal points were negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers by Abramorama’s Richard Abramowitz and Thought Engine’s Karol Martesko-Fenster; on behalf of Vimeo by Jeremy Boxer and Sam Morrill; and on behalf of SHFT by Peter Glatzer.
