Vimeo VOD Is Selling More Than Just Films
Since launching its VOD service, streaming site Vimeo has had consistent downloads across all types of content, says president Dae Mellencamp. The streaming site’s direct distribution option has not only led to increased full-length film downloads, but also increased purchases of how-to, documentary, and TV-style content.
After updating VOD with rental and purchase options back in September, the platform has seen consistent sales across the boards, according to Mellencamp, who spoke with Beet.TV. Mellencamp expressed that direct distribution, although often viewed as an alternative to traditional distribution, has become a complementary way to get filmmakers’ work out there.
Mellencamp specifically referenced the streaming site reaching out to filmmakers at the Toronto International Film Festival and offering them a $10,000 advance if they chose to give first-distribution rights to Vimeo. The deal would give Vimeo a 30-day advance window on content, after which the filmmaker could look for additional distribution.
The streaming site has yet to announce any participating films since the $10,000 offer was announced in September. However, Mellencamp expressed that Vimeo has “a lot more coming on that in the months ahead.”
