Vuguru CEO Larry Tanz Heading to Netflix
Vuguru CEO Larry Tanz has been hired by Netflix as its new vice president of content acquisition for Europe, VideoInk has confirmed. He will be leaving Vuguru, a digital studio founded by former Walt Disney CEO Michael Eisner, after five years at the helm.
At Netflix, Tanz will likely play a key role in building the company’s content library in an area that it just began a major expansion into. Earlier this fall, Netflix launched in several major European countries including France, Germany, and Luxembourg.
“Larry has done an incredible job turning Vuguru into a leading independent studio with titles in distribution worldwide,” said Eisner in a statement. “We know Netflix will benefit greatly from Larry’s leadership and expert knowledge of the space and wish him our very best.”
Tanz declined to comment on the news.
Since joining Vuguru, first as its president and then its CEO, Tanz has overseen a company that’s developed and sold original digital series to digital networks including AOL, Hulu, and Yahoo in the US, and TV distributors internationally. Most of this content has been cross-format, able to function as short-form digital series, long-form TV miniseries, or full-length movies. Recently, Vuguru has been focusing more on long-form, TV-length content, especially as the SVOD space heats up both in the US and internationally.
It appears the studio will continue to operate under new leadership, though it’s unclear who, if anyone, would succeed Tanz as CEO, according to Variety, which first reported the news.Tags: Exec Moves, Larry Tanz, Movers, Netflix, Vuguru
