Here’s Why The ‘Netflix For Pirated Movies’ Is Probably Illegal

Don’t get too excited about Popcorn Time, a controversial new streaming app the tech industry has called the “Netflix for pirated movies.” While it’s a clever idea and hasn’t been prosecuted yet, the legal outlook isn’t good. Popcorn Time lets users search and stream a vast selection of pirated films right in the program. The free, open-source media player is a hybrid between a bittorrent client and typical streaming technology.

There are some big differences between people who stream unlicensed content online and people who don’t. Business Insider partnered with SurveyMonkey Audience to run a survey of 549 people around the country to get an idea of their streaming behavior and their opinions about unlicensed streaming — which, believe it or not, is generally legal, if often unpleasant.

Aereo at the Supreme Court: Ruling for Broadcasters Won’t Harm Cloud Computing

At last week’s U.S. Supreme Court hearing on Aereo, the Justices raised questions about the effect of their decision, if any, on cloud computing. This was no surprise; after all, Aereo has loudly proclaimed that the whole sweep of future innovation will be at stake if it loses. The job of the Court is to examine claims like Aereo’s with a curious but critical eye.
