MCNs — Why Do They Matter?

I write a lot about the multi-channel network digital video world. And, I follow it closely. Why? Is it because I think MCNs are the only relevant players in the new world video ecosystem?

It’s no secret that, after YouTube, Vine is the social video service that everyone has its eye on. Relatively a baby in the world of video on the web, the service, which was launched by Twitter in June 2012, recently crossed 100 million active monthly users.



Speed and Spectators Led to Twitch, a Gaming Nexus

To call a happy accident would be a grand understatement.

The website has quickly emerged as the go-to destination for watching video games, drawing tens of millions of viewers each month. On Monday, that success led to a huge payday for the company’s founders, as Amazon said it had reached a deal to buy Twitch for more than $1 billion.

Why Netflix Had A Rough Night at The Emmys

A lot of ink has been spilled over the crazy success Netflix has had over the last two years with its devotion to original series. The streaming service took home its first Primetime Emmy last year for the Kevin Spacey-fronted political drama “House of Cards,” and was expected by many to rake in its fair share of statuettes last night for its much buzzed-about prison comedy “Orange Is The New Black.” As it turned out, aside from some jokes from Seth Meyers about Netflix being the youngest and prettiest girl at the ball, the streaming service had a fairly uneventful night at the 66th Annual Emmy Awards. Despite earning 31 nominations, the streamer took home only 7 Emmys — most of them in less prestigious technical categories.



Forget Normal Video-on-Demand—Subscriptions Are the Way to Go

As consumers spend more time with long-form digital video such as TV shows and movies, as opposed to shorter clips, streaming services’ subscriber numbers continue to rise. This growth is driving increases in digital and total home entertainment rental and sales revenues in the US, based on recent research.

Giant YouTube Music Monetizer AdRev Names New President

AdRev has named Brian Felsen its new president, making the former chief executive of CD Baby the latest example of the migration of talent and capital to businesses built around YouTube. Felsen, who left the independent music distributor in January, will be tasked with strategy, growth and product development.

Netflix Is Ready for More ‘BoJack Horseman’

A few days after debuting its first season, Netflix has renewed the adult animated comedy “BoJack Horseman” for another season.

With a voice cast that includes Will Arnett (“Arrested Development”), Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”), Amy Sedaris (“Strangers with Candy”), and Alison Brie (“Community”), “BoJack Horseman” tells the story of a washed-up TV horse who tries to make a comeback without getting in his own way.




Comedy Festival Goes Digital With Lolflix and Hulu

Lolflix has been called the Netflix of stand-up comedy. And like their tongue-in-cheek namesake, they’re already changing the world of entertainment by providing a platform to comedians to self-distribute their shows and comedy specials without help from a network like Comedy Central. Now Lolflix has teamed up Hulu to bulk up exposure for the Santa Barbara LOL Comedy Festival, an event which it also sponsors, by creating a dedicated channel for content from the Festival.



Netflix Slams “Disrupting” Comcast-Time Warner Cable Merger To FCC

They may have come up empty-handed at last night’s 66th Primetime Emmy Awards, but Netflix was thinking about the future on Monday. The future of broadband and Internet access that is. In a blistering petition to the FCC, the streaming service recommended that the proposed mega-merger between Comcast and Time Warner Cable be denied.
