‘What’s Trending’ and MiTu Join HLN’s TV Development Slate
Two months ago, CNN rebranded its Headline News channel as HLN, with a directive to become the news channel for the “social-media generation.” With the rebranding came an original development slate that included shows from online video companies like My Damn Channel (which recently changed its name to Omnivision Entertainment) and Frederator Studios.
At the CNN/HLN upfront event in New York this morning, the channel unveiled its full fall development slate, which includes more shows incubated from the web, from the likes of “What’s Trending,” Latino MCN MiTu, and YouTuber Jessica Edwards.
“What’s Trending,” the Emmy-nominated online talk show hosted by Shira Lazar, will be taking its format to HLN. What’s Trending, the company behind the show, is producing a weekly program that highlights the top trending topics and personalities on the web. The TV show will also be hosted by Lazar, and is created by Lazar and What’s Trending CEO Damon Berger.
Latino MCN MiTu is also joining HLN’s development slate via a show called “Wkly [email protected] with Chuey Martinez.” The late-night show will be hosted by LA radio personality Chuey Martinez, who will invite various social media and traditional media stars to the program. The show was described as “one-part talk, two-parts performance, and a spicy splash of sketch comedy.” Created by Doug Greiff and Beatriz Acevedo of MiTu, “Wkly [email protected] is based on MiTu’s web series, “El Show w/ Chuey Martinez.”
Another program comes from Jessica Edwards, a realtor who tours homes and shares her thoughts on realty via her youtube channel TheCarolinasFinest. In “2 Spouses, 3 Houses,” she will look analyze a couple’s social media profiles to determine three choices for their next home: one that’s perfect for one, one that’s perfect for the other, and one that she thinks they both will like. Show is created by Red Arrow Industries.
Most of the other programming unveiled by HLN has to do with the web — whether it’s focusing on highlighting the best of the web, or features an individual who has a sizable following on Twitter.Tags: Damon Berger, Frederator Studios, HLN, jessica edwards, MiTu Networks, My Damn Channel, omnivision entertainment, Shira Lazar, What's Trending
