What’s Trending Teams with YouTuber Davey Wavey for Original Series

/ Feb 24, 2016

What happens when you mix a YouTube star with another YouTube star to produce pet projects? The answer — “My First Time with Davey Wavey,” a new series co-produced by Shira Lazar’s What’s Trending and YouTube star Davey Wavey (1.9 million subscribers on YouTube; 14.8 million views in Jan. 2016, according to Tubular Labs).
Airing twice a month, the series is a project dear to Davey’s heart. “I love the idea of my first time, and getting people to try things that they’ve never done,” he said. “When you step outside your comfort zone, that’s when the magic happens.”
What’s Trending has teamed with the Davey to underwrite and produce the show, which will feature couples and individuals trying new, odd and often taboo situations. For example, the first episode “Couples Try Watching Porn Together” involves Davey hanging out with four couples as they experience porn together for the first time.
“Of course, I enjoyed the awkwardness of being the third wheel with these couples, and feel like we all really — for lack of a better word — rose to the occasion,” said Davey. “Last year, I filmed Shira reacting to a series of dick pics. So, it was really Shira’s chance to get revenge and make me squirm while watching porn with couples.”

What’s Trending, which launched in 2011 on CBSi and later went independent, has built a business around surfacing the stars, the videos and the trends of the Internet . Hosted by longtime video and media figure Lazar, What’s Trending has branched out from its original talk show format to produce sponsored content and activations for brands such as Samsung and Marriott. It has also began producing more evergreen formats like “My First Time with Davey Wavey.”

Lazar, who has become a YouTube figure herself, said: “As What’s Trending continues to grow and expand beyond real-time content, this represents one of many new evergreen original series and content partnerships [we’ll do] with digital talent. We’re excited about an opportunity to work with incredible digital talent we’ve come to know and see grow over the years and bring these new formats to life on our platforms, as well as with partners and brands we work with.”

As for future episodes, the topics to be discussed will remain a mystery for now. What’s Trending and Davey will tap their followings on social media to reveal upcoming episodes and integrate fans into the programming.
“Though I can’t promise that you’ll like what you try, I can promise that you’ll learn a lot about yourself and the world. And there’s no better partner than What’s Trending, with their expertise and quality content, to make it happen,” added Davey.

The series premiered on Feb. 12, 2016.
