The Whistle Sports 6M Subscribers After Latest Roster Moves

Six months after debuting its sports-focused YouTube multi-channel network, The Whistle is claiming a reach of more than 6 million subscribers across 120 channel partners. This is tops across the globe in terms of YouTube-based sports networks.

The latest additions that got the network over the 6-million hill: BallIsLife, a network of channels devoted to pro, college, high-school, and street basketball videos, and STRSkillSchool, a channel featuring freestyle soccer videos, tutorials, skills, and tricks. Anchored by its main YouTube channel, the BallIsLife network brings close to 690,000 subscribers to The Whistle Network, while STRSkillSchool accounts for more than 666,000.

“It’s been incredibly exciting to see the caliber of content creators that are joining our growing sports community and the corresponding surge in subscribers signing up to be part of the fun,” said The Whistle EVP Brian Selander. “The combination of major league support and top notch digital creators appears to be a strong one that will work across platforms.”

It’s been an active year for The Whistle, which is backed by a group of investors that include media veterans Gerry Laybourne and Bob Pittman, and sports stars like Peyton Manning and Derek Jeter. In addition to acquiring The Lacrosse Network, the company has inked content partnerships with the likes of Major League Baseball, Pro Volleyball, Major League Ultimate, and the Harlem Globetrotters.

In May, The Whistle raised $10 million in new financing, and the company says it’s out raising a full Series B.

As it stands now, The Whistle’s YouTube network encompasses 120 channels and is closing on 900 million lifetime views.
