WIGS/Fox Deal Strikes Again: ‘Lauren’ Joins ‘Blue’ on Hulu
WIGS, the female-focused scripted drama channel from Rodrigo Garcia (“In Treatment”) and Jon Avnet (“Black Swan”), has moved its second series from YouTube to Hulu.
“Lauren” tells the story of a third-generation soldier who reports to her female commanding officer that she was raped and continues to be assaulted by her superior officers. The story then chronicles the soldier’s fight for justice as well as the commanding officer’s struggle to help the main character while remaining loyal to an institution she has devoted her life to. The main characters are played by Troian Bellisario (“Pretty Little Liars”) and Jennifer Beals (“The L Word”).
Written by Jay Rodan and Avnet, and directed by Avnet, the series also stars Bradley Whitford (“The West Wing”), Sean Harmon (“NCIS”), Mykelti Williamson (“Forrest Gump), and Justine Ezarik (or more popularly known as iJustine).
The series originally premiered on YouTube as a 15-episode series. On Hulu, the 15 episodes will be repackaged into three, 45-minute long episodes.
“Lauren” is the second WIGS series to expand from YouTube to Hulu, following the launch of the Julia Stiles-starring “Blue” on Hulu last month. A third series, “Jan,” starring Caitlin Gerard, Stephen Moyer, and Virginia Madsen, is also expected to arrive on Hulu in the coming weeks.
It’s the handwork of a marketing and distribution deal WIGS signed earlier this year with Fox Broadcasting, which through its parent company 21st Century Fox counts as one of Hulu’s three owners. The deal covers promotion for WIGS programming on other platforms, including, notably, linear television. In fact, I was recently watching an episode of “Hell’s Kitchen” when a 30-second spot for the Anna Paquin- and Maggie Grace-starring “Susanna” ran during one of the ad breaks. Unsurprisingly, the ad promoted WIGS’ standalone website, WatchWIGS.com, rather than its YouTube channel.
Back to “Lauren,” here’s the first episode on Hulu:
